Location:
Deep Creek Power Plant is located on Deep Creek Lake in the extreme western
part of Maryland in Garrett County. The site is 10 miles north of Oakland, the
county seat, and about 3 hours west of both the Baltimore and Washington
metropolitan areas.
General Information:
Brookfield
Power acquired ownership of the hydroelectric station in 2005. The
facility has provided the area with clean, renewable energy since 1925.
Although the Deep Creek Project is operated primarily for electricity
generation, it is an attractive facility for recreational activities, and it
also provides for incidental flood control.
The station's powerhouse, fully automated in 1948, is operated from the Hydro
Control Center in Liverpool, New York. From start-up to shutdown, the two units
are entirely controlled through an automatic control system.
Deep Creek Dam is located approximately 430 feet above the station's
powerhouse. A concrete-lined tunnel, 1½ miles long and nine feet in diameter,
carries water from the dam to the powerhouse when needed.
